Reflective foil insulation usually consists of two layers of heavy duty polyethylene air bubbles between a sheet of aluminum foil and polyethylene white. The normal thickness of this foil is 5/16th of an inch. The foil side goes towards the door and reflects up to 97% of the radiant heat from the door keeping the inside as much as 20 degrees cooler.
This garage door insulation is a thermal barrier therefore we do not have an r-value measure.
A garage door is more then just an opening to your garage, it is a functional part of the entire garage. And if the rest of the garage is insulated, then why doesn’t your garage door have insulation?
Having insulated your garage door, you increase the efficiency of the garage to retain heat. Not having any garage door insulation creates little to no barrier for the hot or cool air to escape from. That allows heat to escape from the garage door.
The garage door is just another wall in your garage, when keeping heat or a/c in, you want as much of a barrier between the outside world and the world of your garage. With no garage door insulation you are reducing the efficiency of the garage to keep the room at the temperature you want.
When installing the garage door insulation kits, you install them with the foil side facing the garage door. The reflective side then reflects 97% of the radiant heat in the garage, ensuring to keep you and your garage nice and warm.
