As with anything, there are different types of epoxy that have different costs. For high end solvent based epoxy alone, the cost is roughly $0.32 per square foot. To properly apply the epoxy to a concrete garage floor, you will also need more chemicals to etch, seal, prime, and top coat the epoxy. The square footage cost for everything you need to epoxy your garage floor (etch, primer, sealer, epoxy, and topcoat) ranges from $1.37 to $0.79  including the shipping costs depending on how many square feet you need. This does not include the cost of the equipment needed to apply the epoxy


Is epoxy floor coating waterproof?

Are epoxy floors slippery?


When epoxy floors are wet with water, oil, or grease, they are slippery. You can add an aggregate to the epoxy to give it more grip. The aggregate is like adding sand to the top of the epoxy which gives you more traction. 


How long for epoxy floor to dry?


Technically epoxy does not dry, but it cures. It’s a chemical reaction taking place between part A and part B of the epoxy that hardens the epoxy. How long it takes to cure depends on temperature, humidity, and air circulation. Ideally you want warm, dry, circulating air to aid the curing process. The epoxy can be fully cured in 7 days, although may take longer if conditions are not ideal. 


How to apply epoxy floor paint?


Grind the floor so that it has the surface similar to 100 grit sandpaper. Chemically etch the floor to remove all the contaminants. Put down a sealer and primer. Apply the epoxy and epoxy chips if desired. Finish it with a top coat. We have detailed instructions, but that is the overall epoxy floor application process.

Depending on use and maintenance, 10 to 20 years from an epoxy floor is typical. It can go far beyond that if there is only light use on the floor. It’s an investment in your garage that pays off over a long time if done properly.

For garage floors, a high solids solvent based epoxy is best. For interior rooms, like basements, you’ll want a water based epoxy with less fumes. If you were to put our high solids solvent based epoxy in your basement, you would be unable to stay in your home for at least a week while the epoxy cures.

Yes, many epoxies will stick to wood. They are often used in race car trailers.


Can epoxy floor paint be used on walls? 


Yes, you can use epoxy on walls. This will depend on the type of epoxy and the type of wall. Most epoxies will also change in color with UV exposure to the sun. Typically it means they will fade and yellow.


Can epoxy floor be polished?


Yes, you can polish your epoxy floor. Typically you will only need to hose it off and squeegee it dry. In high traffic areas, a wax coating may help with the longevity of the floor. You may want to add another clear top coat layer instead of polishing the floor which will add a fresh layer of protection.


Can epoxy floor be matte finish?


Epoxy does not come with a matte finish. It will be glossy when it is applied. The top coat layer we suggest is also shiny. There are ways to achieve a matte finish, but keep in mind that the matte finish will also hold dirt, which is usually undesirable for a floor.


Can epoxy floor go over tiles?


Probably not. While some people have had luck in using epoxy on tiles, there are many variables that can cause disaster. For the amount of time and money you will invest in putting the chemicals down for the epoxy floor, it’s a smart move to first remove the previous tiles and get back to the concrete. 


Can epoxy floor be removed?


Yes, you can rent a floor grinder from a local tool rental company to remove a previously epoxies floor.


Will epoxy level floor?


Some epoxies are self leveling, but this really means they are thin enough to flow. They are not created to level a drastically uneven floor. Many epoxies are not self leveling because they are too thick to flow, more like putting peanut butter onto the floor.


Will epoxy floor coating cover cracks?


You will want to fill in cracks before using epoxy on the floor. Minor cracks might be filled in by the epoxy, but if they are not, you will have a hard time correcting them later. Expansion joints in concrete can be filled in before applying the epoxy, but you are best leaving the expansion joints alone as they are there to help with expansion and contraction as the weather changes.
