Although pegboard hooks may fit into the slatwall groove, it is not a good idea to use pegboard hooks in the slatwall. The pressure points on the pegboard hooks are different than a slatwall hook, so you run the risk of damaging the slatwall.

Typically you want a 0.75 inch gap behind the pegboard to accommodate the peg hooks going through the pegboard.

Pegboard holes come in two sizes: either the larger 9/32 inch holes or the smaller 3/16 inch holes. The larger 9/32 holes are for accommodating 1/4 inch peg hooks but can also hold the smaller 1/8 inch peg hooks.

Pegboard can be made of metal like galvanized steel, brushed aluminum, diamond plate aluminum, and stainless steel. It can be made of plastic like polyethylene or polypropylene. It can also be made of wood like a tempered hardboard. Each material has pros and cons in regards to strength, expense, and durability.

Making a pegboard requires a lot of machine time to drill each of the holes. The material used, like aluminum, is also expensive as a raw material. Finally shipping pegboards is also expensive since they are typically large sheets. Combine these and the cost of pegboard adds up.

You want to mount the pegboard so there is a 3/4 inch gap between it and the wall behind it. You will use the holes in the pegboard to insert the screws that will attach to the wall using the appropriate wall anchors depending on the type of wall. Ideally you want to have a screw every 12 inches or less. Start by putting a screw in each corner. Measure the horizontal distance between the screws, and evenly divide the distance into spaces of 12 inches or less. Repeat the process for the distance between the corners vertically. Then finish up by using the horizontal spacing and vertical spacing to place screws throughout the pegboard based on this grid.

Yes, you can paint pegboard. The type of paint you use will depend on the type of material the pegboard is made from. You will want to be cautious around the pegboard holes because excess paint may block the hole so that a pegboard hook doesn’t fit.

Yes, you can cut pegboards. You’ll need the appropriate tool to cut the material the pegboard is made from for the cut you want to make. For metal pegboards, an angle grinder with a cutting wheel works well. For tempered pegboard, a circular saw with the appropriate blade does a nice job. Keep in mind that many of the pegboards we carry have a folded edge to lift the pegboard from the wall, so if you cut off that fold, you’ll need to brace the mounting screws with spacers or a furring strip.

Yes, you can use a pegboard outside. You will want to choose a pegboard material that will stand up to the weather in your location. Aluminum, stainless steel, and plastic are typically good materials for outside pegboards.

Metal pegboard can get wet. Aluminum is a good choice for pegboards that will get wet since it does not rust. Plastic is another option for pegboards that will get wet. Tempered wood can not get wet; do not use tempered pegboard in wet locations.

Yes, but there are a few things to keep in mind: the weight of the guns, the material the pegboard is made from, and the distance the gun will be supported away from the pegboard. Depending on the weight of the gun, you will want to choose the pegboard material appropriately. Usually metal pegboard is used, and commonly brushed aluminum or diamond plate aluminum is the metal of choice because it will not rust and looks good. Stainless steel is also a good option and is even stronger than aluminum. How you hang  the guns is also something to consider. The farther away the pegboard hooks hang the gun from the pegboard, the more leverage the weight has on the peg hook and pegboard panel. So it’s best to keep the gun mounted closest to the pegboard.
